The Carolina, or pasture, rose is a freely suckering shrub forming broad spreading thickets at maturity. This rose produces single, fragrant, rich pink flowers followed by red hips and dull red foliage in the fall. Found in moist to dry prairies, open woods, thickets, clearings and roadsides, it prefers rocky or sandy, well drained soils, is drought tolerant and can withstand more shade than most roses. This rose is a source of nectar for butterflies and its red hips attract birds. The genus Rosa supports up to 122 lepidoptera species. Flora of the Southeastern United States
